Kym Thompson Design.

Kym Thompson started surfing in the long board era of the 60?s. He was a junior state champion and a well respected early member of the Seaview Road Board Riders Club where he earned the nickname ?Roader?. He has been shaping since the age of 15 and his shapes are evolutions of decades of development transitioning some great designs in all forms.

In 1969 Kym started shaping for John Arnold?s in Adelaide, then moved to Don Burford?s in 1970. In 1971, Kym moved to the coastal town Torquay, seeing a bright future and the opportunity to surf the then uncrowded waves of the west coast of Victoria. In this period Kym shaped simultaneously for Ripcurl, Klemm-Bell and Pat Morgan and shortly after became the head shaper for Klemm-Bell Surfboards in Torquay.

In 1975 Kym foundered one of surfing's iconic surfboard brands 'Watercooled'.

General Fin Characteristics:-

  • Depth ? The maximum height of a fin as measured from the bottom surface of the board. This shows how far the fin goes in the water. The hold of the surfboard increases with more depth but generally makes it harder to turn as well. 3-4 inch depth is standard on tri-fins and longboard single fins typically have a depth of nine inches.
  • Template ? The fin outline.
  • Base ? The length of the fin where it joins the surfboard. Increasing length adds forward drive, but makes it harder to turn. Shortboard tri-fins usually have a 3.5-4.5 inch base, longboard single fins are about 6 inches.
  • Foil ? The horizontal curve of the fin, measured from the front edge to trailing edge.
  • Rake ? The distance between the trailing edge of the fin base and the fin tip. This is the swept back characteristic of the fin. Increasing rake increases traction.
  • Tip ? The top third of the fin. More tip means more hold.
  • Flex ? Stiff fins are faster but flexible fins are easier to turn.

Starting at the young age of 15, Kym Thompson made designing surfboards his life’s work and to this day he designed and shaped everything from single fin boards, right down to all multi-fin configurations.

Originally Kym began his career shaping longboards and as the shortboard era took hold, Kym advanced his skills and transitioned his designs to meet the demands of the market.

From the beginning, dating back to 2001, Kym and NSP built a strong partnership with Kym being the mastermind behind the popular PU Heritage Series. His Endless, Hooligan, Dream Rider and Fighting Fish shapes are now integrated in the light weight and sustainable Coco Flax series.

NSP is looking forward to continuing a long tradition of bringing high quality, innovative, yet affordable surfboards by Kym Thompson to the market.
